The new Management of National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) headed by DG/CEO, Dr. Obi Peter Adigwe has maintained its commitment to move the institute to greater heights of research breakthrough. In actualizing this desired objective, the NIPRD team was at the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Headquarters at Jabi Abuja recently. The visit was specifically to explore areas of collaborations between the two institutions in technical areas.

Dr. Adigwe, Director-General/CEO NIPRD Abuja, highlighted the areas for immediate collaboration to include but not limited to the following: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) studies, the assessment of ribavirin, quality assurance of laboratories and genetic aspects of AMR. Reference was made to the elaborate study on “Large scale use of antibiotics in Livestock within Abuja FCT” done by NIPRD which should serve as a foundation for a similar nationwide survey due to the negative impact of transferred AMR to the population with its consequential high rate of antimicrobial treatment failures.

The DG/CEO NIPRD, remarked that the institute has highly experienced manpower, state of the art facilities and two relevant up to date certifications; ISO:9001 and ISO:17025 for Quality Management Systems and accreditation for Testing Laboratory respectively. These confer high accuracy, precision and integrity in the entire processes done by the institute. In addition to a functional research clinic at the institute. He requested the NCDC to avail themselves with the use of such facilities at NIPRD.

The DG/CEO NIPRD further reiterated that in addition to standards attained in Laboratory analysis, the institute undertakes other ancillary researches on drug distribution and supply chain other specialized research and development consultancy services. Currently, the institute had developed a project named Contextual Processing Protocols (CPP), designed to specifically harness the phytomedicinal and natural resources potentials of each of the states of the federation. Key components of the project were Human Capital Development aimed at empowering the local people through job creation, boosting economic activities of the states and conserving foreign exchange because most of the products would be processed up to a stage ready for export as raw material or as a finished product to be commercialized for immediate consumption within the country.

The National Coordinator and CEO NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Iheakweazu, welcomed the NIPRD team and also congratulated the DG/CEO of NIPRD on his appointment. He also wished him best of God’s guidance in his endeavours and promised that the visit will serve as a major milestone towards joint partnership and cooperation to improve the overall health and well-being of Nigerians. He expressed his delight with the activities going in NIPRD and suggested collaborative study in chemical analysis of herbal medicines marketed in the country. He reiterated that NCDC and NIPRD should collaborate in many other areas such as clinical evaluation of vaccines, Phytomedicine development and evaluation, grant stride, evaluation of health, pandemic preparedness, HIV resistance testing and sharing of technical staff on need base.

It was jointly agreed in line with strengthening the one health approach, that the National study for AMR would be a good platform for starting the mutually beneficial collaboration, then followed by staff exchange, development of customized training modules for capacity building and NCDC can also tap on the genetic technology experience of NIPRD. The process of entering into a Memorandum of Understanding that would formalize the relationship was agreed to start in earnest.

The visit concluded with a guided tour of the NIPRD team through the Incidence center of NCDC where incidence of disease breakout are monitored.
