CULT WAR ASSUMING DANGEROUS DIMENSION IN RIVERS STATE.
As cult war continue to spread in Rivers state, Suspected Deygbam cult members invaded Ibaa community in Emohua LGA yesterday April 12th, 2019 to dislodge Icelander cult group domicile in the community. There was all day shooting as the small military unit present in Ibaa could not stop the shooting. Meanwhile the Icelander Cult group who could not withstand the shooting ran to Obele town in Emohua LGA one of their strongholds to take refugee. Number of casualty is still unknown. Intelligence report also indicates that the cultists who fled the communities after it was captured by their rivals have taken the war to PortHarcourt where they target their rivals or people they believe are sympathetic to their rivals.
ANALYSIS OF THE GANG WAR IN VARIOUS PLACE IN RIVERS STATE
1.IN MGBUODOHIA RUMULUMENI, OBI/AKPOR LGA
The cult war was between Deygbam and Dewell(Junior Vikings) cult groups last Saturday April6,2019 and 9 persons were killed including innocent people. 2.In Elekahia, Choba, Obi/Akpor LGA
The cult war is between Deygbam and Icelander cult groups. Over 15 persons have been killed since last year. The war intensified this year as Icelander cult war intends to dislodge a formidable Deygbam cult group in that axis and its leader suspected to hail from Rumuparala. 3.In Garrison on Thursday, April 11th, 2019 A young man was gunned down at bout 1600hrs. The war in Garrison, Rumukalagbor, Ogbunabali which started November, 2018 with killing of 3 persons in Waterlines Junction, is between Amphibious Brigade Batch of Greenlander Cult group and Waje Marine Icelander cult group. The war was caused by control of illegal motor parks around garrison and waterlines.
4.In Rumuche Emohua LGA on Sunday, 7th April, 2019 Three persons were killed in a cult war between Deygbam and Icelander cult groups.
5.REASON FOR UPSURGE OF CULT WAR AFTER 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS IN RIVERS STATE.
1.Fight for control of territory to ensure economy survival after the elections. For example is a known fact that any cult group which controls a particular territory collects revenues from motor park both legal and illegal, they collects revenue from market, in areas where they are oil, they control the bunkering activities, aside political patronage which comes onces there is election.
Cultism in Rivers state is mostly responsible for KIDNAPPINGS, ARMED ROBBERY AND BUNKERING ACTIVITIES. These are the three major means of their survival aside political patronage. The most alarming aspect is the increase in rate of cult activities in primary and secondary schools in Rivers state. Our secondary schools have become a breeding ground for cultists.In community secondary school Rumulumeni, the interhouse sports that held in march 2019 was disrupted by secondary school cultists from another school who came to look for their rivals. The two Policemen on duty ran away. The same was recorded at St Andrew School Inter House Sports in Mile 2 Diobu,Just a stone throw from Mile 1 Police Station.
Davies Briggs Chairman of Rivers state post primary schools board arrested some secondary school cult members in a visit to a particular secondary school in Bonny in Bonny Local Government area when He paid an unschedule visit to the School in February, 2019.
WAY FORWARD.
1.Government at all level must stop patronizing cultists in any guise. The Government should also stop rewarding of criminals in any guise
2.The guidance and counselling units in all primary and secondary schools should be more vibrant and purposeful.
3.DSS should monitor the activities of so called repentant cultists as many of them are still involved in nefarious activities. 4.The security apparatus should do more on intelligence gathering, if possible plant informant in all the cult groups.
5.The Police should be adequately funded and provided with adequate logistics. ..
.6.The Local Government Chairmen and Councillors should be mandated to give security reports in their domain on regular basis. There is no cultist in a ward in an LGA that is not known to a councillor. Finally We should note that Cultism in Rivers state is an organized business, The four major street/community cult groups Greenlander, Icelander, Deygbam and Dewell cult groups have State Executives, LGA Executives, Community Executives and Unit Executives. They have an organized Organogram and function like Military Formation.
