A Non Governmental Organization (NGO) Relief International celebrated World Day Against Drug Trafficking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria yesterday July 13, 2019 with the Theme ‘Development without illicit drugs and illicit trafficking/support of victim of torture’
In his welcome address, Executive Director of Relief International, Ambassador Green Isaac stated that illicit drug poses health danger to humanity and also undermines political stability and economic development of a nation
Ambassador Green Isaac said ‘We are here today to recognize, discuss about drug abuse and the effects on the society’
In his contribuction, the Royal Father of the day, His Royal Majesty Eze Leslie Nyebuchi Eke,Eze Oha 111 Evo of Evo Kingdom who was represented by Dr.Paul Wowhor said ‘illicit drug destroys development’.
He described illicit drug as any substance that transmit, stimulate and inhibit our system. According to the highly revered Monarch, if the drug stimulates us we are going to act contrary to the way we are suppose to act
Eze Oha Evo 111 of Evo Kingdom explained that the use of illicit drug can be prevented if parents and teachers in schools cultivate the habit of educating children on the dangers of consumption of illicit drugs from their tender age.
His Royal Majesty Eze Leslie Eke asserted that illicit drugs are largely responsible for social vices like prostitution, cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, rape among others.
He enjoined all the participants in the programme to contribute their quota in the fight against the use of illicit drugs
Also speaking Izoma Godwin a representative of Red Cross Society of Nigeria said ‘the organization will enshrine the sensitization of the public on drug abuse in its programme’
Many Participants at the event stated that the various agencies saddled with responsibility of combating use of illicit drug must be proactive, patriotic and sincere in the fight against use of illicit drugs
Highlight of the event include presentation of Ambassador of Peace awards to individuals who has contributed immensely to the de elopement of the society.
Ambassador Green Isaac while presenting the award to individuals with distinct characters said ‘the recipients must show example in character and deeds that they are truly ambassadors of peace’
Our correspondent reports that at about 20 people from various endeavours were recognized
Earlier a member of the high table and national coordinator of Civil Rights Council in Nigeria, Barrister Arochukwu Paul Ogbonna said ‘Civil Rights Council as a community based advocacy group shares the same ideology with Relief International’
He stated that Civil Rights Council provides the people with the required tools and techniques for promotion of Human Rights Advocacy
Other prominent persons who graced the occasion include Prince Ekpere and Prince Mazzi of Social Action Nigeria, Kpalap Sebastian, Kelechi Uzoma Chairman and Secretary of Civil Rights Council Port Harcourt respectively
So many students of University of Port Harcourt attended the event
