
Upata kingdom in Ahoda East local Government area of Rivers State, Nigeria has pegged the bride price to be paid on the head of their daughters by prospective male suitors as 30,000 naira.
This is contained in the Upata marriage amendment law of 2018.The law also prohibits father in-laws from collecting any money from prospective male suitors before or during the marriage process.
The bye law also states that irrespective of Educational qualifications of the woman who is sought for marriage, the bride price still remains 30,000 naira.
The law affirms that cash gifts to multiple relations of the bride shall be discretional.
A lady in the community who did not want her name to be in print told Revelation Agents that the amendments that made the bride price to be 30,000 naira is order.
She revealed that the high bride price before now has scared many male suitors away which in turn led to increase in number of unmarried woman who are of marriageable age in the community. She appealed to the Traditional institution to ensure there is strict compliance to the bye law.
The marriage amendment bye- law of 2018 was signed by his Royal Majesty Eze Enene Felix Otuwarikpo,Eze Igbu Upata 111 of Upata Kingdom.
