Mixed reaction have continued to trail the alleged concealing of identities of lecturers who were sacked by Management of the Kenule Saro-Wiwa Polytechnics(Ken Poly) Bori ,Khana local area of Rivers State on offences bordering on sex-for grades.
Rector of the institution Dr. Onengiye Goergewill had told the Rivers State House of Assembly committee on education that visited the school on oversight functions that the institution sacked ten lecturers and suspended seven on issues of sex for grades but did not make the names of the affected lecturers public.
In her reaction, Uzoma Kelechi , a Programme Officer of Gender And Development(GADA) in a telephone interview with National Network, said “ the institution ought to have mentioned the names of the sacked lecturers for purpose of fairness and transparency, instead of concealing their identities”.
On his part, Comrade Green Isaac, A Human Rights Advocate told our reporter that the institution is suppose to make the names public considering the nature of offence that warranted their sack.
Comrade David Nelson Ordu,a former President of Students Union Government(SUG) in Rivers State University said “the institution have the responsibility of disclosing the identities of the sacked lecturers for the interest of the general public”.
However, a Port Harcourt based legal practitioner, Festus Bonwin Esq said “the disciplinary measure that led to sack of the lecturers is not a conviction but rather administrative procedure of the institution”.
The lawyer explained that the institution is right not to have made the names of the sacked lecturers public as they have not be pronounced guilty by court of competent Jurisdiction.
Another Port Harcourt based lawyer Mercy Christopher Esq opined that the disclosure of the names of lecturers who were sacked by the Polythenics may amount to defamation since the said offenders were not found guilty by any court.
It would be recalled that the Rivers State House of Assembly committee on Education have being paying visit to higher institutions in the state to find out what the Management of the school is doing to curtail menace of sex for grades.
