The Lagos State Police command,Nigeria has arrested one Sergent Lukmon Akanbi attached to Victoria Island Police station for allegedly shooting and killing one Ramon Babatunde around Eko Atlantic early Friday morning.
A statement released and signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Elkana Bala,spokesperson of Lagos State Police command on Friday afternoon explained that there was a fracas between the Sergent and the victim at about 0420 hours around Eko Atlantic when the Police officer used his pistol and shot the deceased. The statement read that the victim was rushed to Naval Dockyard Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
According to the statement, the conduct of Sergent Akanbi fell short of the professional conduct guiding the use of fire arm.
The statement revealed that the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu has ordered the transfer of the the Police officer to State Criminal Investigation Department(SCID).
The statement added that henceforth supervising officers shall be vicariously liable for misconduct of their men as one of the method to curb human rights abuses by officers in Lagos State Police command.
CP Hakeem warned that violations of human rights and other professional misconduct will not be tolerated.
