The Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association(NBA) Port Harcourt, branch Prince Nyekwere Esq has tasked the Police to ensure justice for the 23 year old widow allegedly raped by a Police Inspector in Rivers .
The NBA Chairman who spoke to Journalists after he led executives of the group,Civil Society Organisations,Journalists to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department(SCID) DCP Ahmed Kantagora disclosed that he received assurance from the DCP that investigation is on going and any officer found culpable will be dealt with in accordance to the law.
Nyekwere revealed that the DCP directed the OC Legal to take him to the cell where, he saw the Police Inspector and two other officers accused of conspiracy and rape of the widow and can confirm as at Wednesday 19th August 2020,that the accused officers are in detention .
Mr. Nyekwere noted that NBA and other interest group want the matter to be properly investigated and those found culpable should be charged to court.
The NBA Chairman called on groups and all men of good will to join in the fight against Sexual and Gender Based Violence to ensure it is reduced to the bearest minimum.
Earlier the Deputy Commissioner incharge of SCID, DCP Kantagora expressed delight in the visit by the group.
DCP Kantagora noted that the command and SCID under his watch ensures respect for human rights and do not spare erring officers.
DCP Kantagora revealed that the orderly room trial of the accused officers will commence Wednesday. He further stressed the need for collaboration with the groups in areas of training, conferences, seminars .
