The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Salisu Galadunci made this known on Tuesday in Port Harcourt during a media chart to mark the ‘2020 World Road Safety Day/ African Road Accident Victims Remembrance Week.
According to him, the program is particularly set aside by the United Nations through the FRSC to remember road crash victims especially, those of them that have either died or have suffered injuries as a result of road accidents.
“As part of events to commemorate the ‘2020 World Road Safety Day/ African Road Accident Victims Remembrance Week’ we have embarked on a media sensitisation.
“This is because we really need the media to assist us propagate the information on road safety and accident prevention/management.
“We have out lined series of activities with a special Jumait prayer on Friday where we have invited service men and other sister agencies.
“By Saturday, we members of staff here shall be having a candle light night afterwards, the Road Safety Officers Wives Association in conjunction with special marshals will be visiting some hospitals to make some donations to road accident victims.
“Few donations shall also be made to affected hospitals where the victims are being treated while a special church service shall be held here in Port Harcourt to wrap up the event,” Galadunci said.
He also said that the importance of the remembrance week was to keep road users abreast with road traffic rules so as to curb accidents.
“This is a period we remind ourselves and the general public that road traffic crash is claiming more lives than any pandemic we can think of.
“On daily basis on Nigerian roads, due to some negligence on the part of the drivers, road crashes involving live loss and injuries have become a constant worry.
“And that is why the United Nations initiated this exercise to help bring a sober reflection on road accidents and prevention.
“Our country has indeed lost so many of her population to road accidents a demography which falls within the productive ages of 18- 45 years,” he added.
