The Rivers State Police command says it’s investigating the alleged killing of Benedict Chukwu by his younger brother, Patrick Chukwu at Elele-Alimini in Emohua LGA Rivers State.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police command,SP Grace Iringe Koko in response to enquiry by our reporter into the incident said the matter has been reported at the Police station and full scale Investigation has commenced, though the suspect is at large.
Mr Benedict Chukwu,a patent medicine dealer (Chemist) aged forty-four years was said to have been shot death by his younger brother aged forty years on Monday 13, February,2023 over an argument in their family .
Ambassador Joseph Asomeji former General Secretary, Elele-Alimini Community Development Committe (CDC) who is also cousins to the deceased victim and the suspect in an interview with Journalists said
“What actually happened in Mgbuayim autunomous community in Chuwku’s family which happens to be my maternal home .Both of them are my cousins.
“The issue was that the Elder brother late Mr Benedict Chukwu came from his daily hustling.Returning back to the home the family house where both of them are living. The younger brother Mr Patrick Chukwu used chairs to block access where Benedict Chukwu was to carry his motorbike and cross.
“The late elder brother pleaded with the younger brother to allow him access to pass with his bike inside the family house where both of them are living, the younger brother refused to remove the chairs that were blocking the road.
“Angrily,Mr Benedict used his legs to kick the chairs out of the road, then the younger brother picked up a wedge (big stick) to hit the elder brother, neighbours came out and remove the wedge from his hand. The younger brother went inside again and picked machete, the neighbours gathered him and collected the machete from him.
“As if that was not enough, the younger brother ran inside again and brought out double barrel gun, hunter’s guns and he fired immediately at the elder brother’s neck who died instantly.Officially, the matter has been reported to the Police but immediately the incident happened, the younger brother took to his heels .
“Ordinarily if it were when the custom and tradition were active as it were, immediately he committed the crime, he would have carried a rope to a place in the community to hang himself and die peacefully.
“The matter is condemnable. We actually don’t know what came over him for him to have committed the offence. The fact remains that both of them are bloodily related .They are of the same parents 44 and 40 years. We condemn the act.Somebody who commit must have to face the law”
As at press time,we gathered that Egbeda Police Division in Emohua LGA has visited the scene of the crime.
