Reaction has continued to thrall the pathetic condition of the people of Eastern Obolo local government area of Akwa-Ibom state who were currently being displaced by Ocean surge.
Otono Obolo, a non-political pressure group with membership drawn from Andoni local government area of Rivers and Eastern Obolo local government area in Akwa-Ibom state were on Saturday in the Emere-Oke community to identify with victims.
Dr Romsan Dressman, Administrator of the group expressed worry over possible cholera outbreak as the only source of drinking water (underground water) has been overtaken by the salty water from the ocean.
Dressman said that there was need for an on the spot medical assessment of the area to ascertain and effectively check possible outbreak of waterborne diseases.
The group donated 500 bags of packaged water to victims and urged government and relevant bodies to come to the aid of victims.
Meanwhile, Mr Iroigak Ikann, a former Commissioner for Lands and Housing and indegine of the area has called on the state government to carry out an embankment to check reoccurance.
“It’s sad, we woke up and saw our communities submerged almost 2 feet by Ocean water that has overflown its boundary.
“This can be checked by an embankment but no attention as to that regard,” he said.
Our correspondent has contacted the Akwa-Ibom state Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources Mr Charles Udoh on the issue.
Udoh in his response has said that he was not aware of any incident of ocean surge in Eastern-Obolo LGA.
In his words “I’m not aware of any incident of ocean surge or disaster in Eastern-Obolo LGA.
“In fact, I was with Mrs Victoria Tallick the Chairman of Eastern-Obolo yesterday and she did not mention that either unofficially or otherwise.
“My office has not also received any memo to that effect, however, we look forward to taking steps towards salvaging the situation,” he said.
