Following the flood which ravaged the coastal communities across Ekpeye communities, the Ekpeye Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs has inaugurated a 13 man committee to evolve a strategy to control flooding in the affected communities in the two local government of Ahoada East and Ahoada West areas of the Rivers State.
Also, another 13 man committee was inaugurated to collate the list of all repentant cultists in Ekpeye with a view to identifying appropriate rehabilitation measure.
Inaugurating the committees at the Ekpeye Council House in Ahoada Town today, Eze Felix Enene Otuwarikpo said the steps became necessary to proffer solution to the flooding challenges confronting the people of Ekpeye.
The two committees which are put in place by the Eze Ekpeye Logbo In-Council, are to work hand in hand with the traditional rulers, Uzugbani Ekpeye and other groups to identify flash points for flood disaster and, to solicit assistance from corporate organisations doing business in Ekpeyeland and from prominent Ekpeye sons and daughters.
Eze Otuwarikpo who is the Regent of Ekpeye was flanked by Eze Igbu Ubie, Eze Agustine Maxwell Okpokiri; Eze Igbu Akoh, Eze Godpower Okpagi and Eze Igbu Ugbobi, Eze Innocent Odum, said: “as a result of the flash floods that have adversely affected most communities, especially in the riverine areas of Ekpeye, we plan to carry out, through the flood committee an assessment tour of communities so affected by this unforeseen natural disaster.
“Among others, the commiittee is to ascertain the impact of the floods; the number of communities affected; public property affected; the extent of damage to communities and suggest measures that could assist us in the pursuit for succour from governments and corporate bodies.”
The Regent also charged the Ex.- Cultists Rehabilitation Committee headed by Rev. Friday O. C. Anthony, to prepare a comprehensive report of the renunciation exercise and source for aid from governments, corporate organisations and philanthropic individuals with a view to rehabilitating them.
Members of the flood committee included; High Chief ThankGod Okedike, Chairman; HRH Eze N. B. Okwa, Chief Innocent Ekwereogu, High Chief Robinson P. N. Ozurumba, Mr. Friday Benneth, High Chief Gad Ewoh and Chief Clifford Eyii.
Other members of the committee are Comrade Boma Agi, High Chief Felix Ubaji, Chief Ifeanyi Nweye, Dcn. Mbadiwe Hillas Ideozu, Chief Ukachukwu Aja and Chief Gospel Ned.
Eze Okpokiri however advised members of the committees to put Ekpeye as a priority in the discharge of their assignments.
Both Okedike and Anthony assured of their committee’s commitment to work in accordance with their terms of reference.
