The Nigeria Inspector General of Police,IGP Kayode Egbetokun has justified the barricade of twenty three Local Government(LGA) Secretariats in Rivers State by the Police.
IGP Egbetokun in a meeting with senior Police officers in Abuja,Federal Capital of Nigeria, noted that the Police barricade was to maintain law and order not to intimidate anyone.
The Nigeria Police Boss stated that the barricade would remain until court delivers judment on the matter.
Recall that the Rivers State Governor,Siminalayi Fubara had on Tuesday morning,18th June,2024 directed heads of administrations of local government councils in the twenty three LGAs of the state to take over helms of affairs following the expiration of the tenure of the Chairmen of Council.
However,the Chairmen of LGA Councils in the state had argued that they still have six months tenure elongation following the bill passed into law by Martins Amawhule led Assembly that they will not vacate the council.
The development caused serious clash between the two political factions at various council in the state on Tuesday 19th June,2024.
The incident resulted to Police barricading and taking over the LGA secretariats. Rivers State Governor in his response to the development while swearing in members of CareTaker Committes(CTC) in the twenty -three LGAs Councils on 19th June,2024 said the newly inaugurated CTC Chairmen can operate from anywhere.
