Dennis Otobo  the  Coordinator of Civil Society for HIV/AIDS and other health related services in Nigeria ( CISHAN) in Rivers State has revealed that the practice of some religious organizations demanding HIV test or certificate  for intending couple  is discriminatory and an infringement on rights of persons living with the virus.

Mr Otobo in an exclusive interview with revelationagents.com however said is not discriminatory for the intending couple with consent  from both persons to agree on HiV test to know their status.

The CISHAN coordinator  said  “we intervened several times and that is why we have inter religious committee to advise , which is working very well.

“It’s actually an infringement of the right of any person living with the HIV virus, for any institution to ask of he/her HIV certification before employing the person. In Nigeria we have a law which is called HIV Anti discrimination law, which clearly spelled it out, that you can not disengage a person because of the person’s  HIV status, just like asking someone to stop working because the person has malaria or diabetes”.

revelationagents.com reports that one of the objectives of  the HIV and AIDS Anti-Discrimination Act of 2014 is to protect the rights and dignity of persons living with the virus and criminalize stigmatization, discrimination against HIV/AIDS patients.
