The Relief International Africa a non-profit non governmental organisation based in Rivers State was one of the 10 partners selected from Rivers State to as sup-implimenting partners of Women United and Economic Empowerment CIVIC EDUCATION projects on Strengthening democratic processes at the local Level with funds from UNDEF in 5 Communities in 3 local government area. The Communities are namely, Ogale Community in Eleme LGA, Bori in Khana LGA, Bodo and Eele Communities in Gokana LGA and DIOBU & BOROKIRI communities in Portharcourt city LGAs of River’s State.
The Essence of the sensitisation was to enable citizens participate in Government and governance processes at the local government level.
The program which kick stated in August, 2020 and ended in December 11th, 2020 gave opportunities to youth, women and women leaders and traditional rulers to come together to understand how they can participate in decision making instead relegating governance alone to elective office holders only. Youth in different communities came out to participate in this work.
Comr. Green Isaac, the Lead Director of Relief International Africa, said the program was an eye opener for the selected communities and that members of the communities now understands what it means to participate and not to allow those who seek and win elections do their job for them.
In his words “Governance is to big a business to be left alone for only political office holders only or politicians”.
The program was a way to encourage citizens to wake up from the old ways of thinking that after elections, it is over. The organisation encouraged them to use Community charter of demand in engaging anyone who seeks public office.
