The Political crisis rocking Rivers state took a dangerous dimension on Tuesday 18th June,2024 as a Police officer and vigilante personnel was shot dead by yet to be identified persons at Omuma local Government Council Area local at Eberi.
Trouble started when some Youth came to the secretariat to demand that the Council Chairman should not gain access into the secretariat following the expiration of their tenure on Monday June 17,2024 and subsequent directive by the Rivers State Governor for Head of Local Government Administrations to take over the Councils pending further directive.
We learnt that some hoodlums claiming to be in support and against the two factions of political groups embroiled in the crisis had engaged themselves in heavy causing panic and pandemonium in the community.
revelationagents.com cannot categorically say how the Police officer and vigilante personnel at the scene was caught by bullet leading to their death.
A video which surfaced on internet hours after the shooting at Omuma Council secretariat showed one faction of the group involved in the crisis claiming to have taken over the Council while singing praise of a particular political leader.
As at press time the Nigeria Police had taken over Obio/Akpor Council secretariat earlier seized by one of the Political factions in the state.Other LGAs like Khana,Degema,Asari-Toru,PortHarcourt,Eleme,Ogu-Bolo etc were taken over by Youth said to be opposed to tenure elongation of the Local Government Chairmen
Reacting to the incident,the spokesperson for Rivers state Police Command,SP Grace Iringe said “We lost a Police Officer and vigilante personnel at Eberi -Omuma.Investigation is ongoing”.
