University Don Faults Liquidation Of Tactical Units Of Nigerian Police Force

A university DON Professor Wordu a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, says he does not support the liquidation of the tactical squad unit of the Nigeria police. He said “our society will be worst if we throw away the policing from its tactical approach. He made this statement during an interview with journalists at the end of a stakeholders meeting hosted by Search for Common Ground today in Port Harcourt.

The university DON while numerating the functions of the tactical squad of the police he said ” there will be no society without policing. And every policing unit, every security architecture needs a tactical squad”

“A tactical squad is a squad that respond quickly and faster to solve crime or handle security issues. So it is important that there should be tactical squad in every country security sector”

“I support the end of SARS, I support agitations against police brutality, but I don’t subscribe to the police liquidating tactical squad”

“The unfortunate case in Nigeria was that our tactical squad which is SARS misfired. They made mistakes and became brutal that is the reason for the end SARS agitation which is targeted as police brutality”

“But we should not throw away policing, we should not throw away tactical squad of police services because of the error of SARS”

“The moment we remove police from the streets, hoodlums, criminals will take over society. Already in Nigeria we have a situation of weaponized crime where alms proliferation is very high. Where proliferation of security camouflage is very high; because of that criminal groups can always camouflage in the name if police, in the name of security to do evil, to do more more harm to the society”

“They can give it any name but what is important is reforming their operation; operation reform will still produce a very effective tactical squad”.

Earlier, in his address at the meeting, the State Chairman of the Rivers State Peace Architecture Dialogue (PAD), Hon. Ken Robinson called for a total overhaul of the security architecture in Nigeria.

“There is need to rejig the nation security architecture and of cause its configuration. It is not just aftermath of the #EndSARS protest and allbyhe unnecessary destruction that was perpetrated by unscrupulous elements”

“Nigeria security is under threat, insecurity is increasing by the day. In the North West the activities are known by all Nigerians. We don’t even want to mention the issue of bojo haram in the North East but also inbyhe South South, South East, the South West, the entire country is under some kind of situation that cannot be explained and it put serious questions on the viability, the efficiency and effectiveness of the nations extant security architecture”

“So we are calling on the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to do something about the security situation and it starts with a complete reform, overhaul of the security architecture yo reposition it for greater efficiency and effectiveness to secure Nigeria and the lives and properties of Nigerians”

On his part, the state coordinator of Search For Common Ground Mr. Cosmos Bemene through the medium called on government to include Nigerian youths in governance processes, stating that Nigerian youths are already well knowledge and well prepared for leadership.

He said ” the reasons why the youths embarked on a peaceful protest, is because they felt excluded and we are saying, that relevant agencies should look at how to include the youths in governance. Let the youths have opportunity to be appointed into offices, let the conditions be made good enough for them to run for elective offices. The “Never to young to run” bill that has been signed into law needs to be implemented”

Numerating the achievements of the organization, Mr. Bemene noted that one of it’s major successes is that certain communities who have been at loggerheads who had had no peace internally overtime, have been able to be resolved by the organization.

Also, ” parties have been reconciled and they have been resolver to see the need to work with other communities to provide sustainable peace and stability in these communities, and that is the bedrock of what we are talking about”

“If the communities are safe, the local government areas will be safe and the state will be safe, the entire region as well will be safe and the country will be safe”

The state coordinator used the medium to appreciate its organization stakeholders including security agencies, media, CSO’s, traditional rulers, women groups etc,, stating that ” there is no way we can successfully say we have succeeded without mentioning that their support was very instrumental to the success we recorded, I very grateful to them “
