An environmental activist Mrs Faith Amadi of Environmental Justice have revealed they are living like refugees in their community in Umuechem in Etched local Government area of Rivers state, Nigeria

She made the assertion during Nigeria Resource Justice Conference with the Theme PETROLEUM AND COMMUNITIES IN NIGER DELTA :SETTING THE POLICY AGENDA FOLLOWING TWO DECADES OF CIVIL RULE

She said “due to environmental pollution ,there is no means of livelihood for the community as their land and water have been polluted “

She said “despite the fact that the community is an oil bearing community there is nothing to show for”

According to the Environmental Activist, health challenges like cancer, miscarriage, kwashikor, diseases of the lungs etc are very prevalent in the area putting the lives of the people at risk

It would be recalled that in 1990 Umuechem was ransacked by Military with reports of so many deaths
